A System Overview

Your car’s air conditioner uses refrigerant to absorb and dissipate heat. The system cycles refrigerant through high and low pressure sides, changing its physical state between gas and high-pressure gas/liquid. As the name reveals, the compressor pressurizes the refrigerant through compression. The condenser cools the refrigerant. This component, located near the radiator, also facilitates the refrigerant’s return to a lower pressure. The orifice tube or expansion valve allows the refrigerant to travel to the evaporator where heat from the passenger cabin is absorbed. Any contaminants and excess moisture that can damage the A/C system are removed by the dryer/receiver/accumulator.

When to Seek Repair

It’s a good idea to have Johnson’s Tire & Auto check your A/C about once each year, ideally before hot weather arrives. This allows us to assess function and remedy any obvious problems. Between visits, there are observable signs that should prompt you to schedule a visit for car A/C repair. Associated with the most common repair, an obvious clue for many motorists is air that isn’t as cool as it should be. When the system is working but not cooling as much as desired, your car likely lacks sufficient refrigerant. It’s unsurprising if your automobile needs a refrigerant recharge a few times during its usable life, but this shouldn’t be required often. If it is, we’ll need to find the leak. A failed compressor may be the culprit if the system powers on but doesn’t cool. You may also become aware that you’re not hearing or feeling the subtle, yet telling, on/off cycling of the compressor. When the A/C fails to work, there’s likely an electrical issue, such as a broken wire. Even when the system seems to be functioning normally, watch for wet carpet or puddling water under the dash. This usually points to a clog that has allowed water to backflow into the passenger cabin. If allowed to continue long term, your vehicle may sustain structural damage, and the interior can mildew. Be conscious of odd smells, too. If you notice a damp, musty odor each time you turn on the A/C, the system may have mold. We’ll need to remediate that to protect your air quality.
